While I have been looking for inspiration, I have come across several variations on the theme of using nine squares on a card. So when I found some squared backing paper in my stash I thought I'd have a go.
I then realised that this was a good way to use up some scraps of backing paper and card and set about cutting up lots of 4cms squared pieces of paper and these are what I came up with.
As you can see lots of different effects can be produced with this design and its uses can be quite versatile.

What a great idea Anne! All the cards look fabulous and all so different even though they have the same layout. Definitely a good way to use up scraps, I may have to try it myself!
